The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the idea behind this extension is that all websites that use it must comply with special rules. In other words, all .MOBI websites should be designed to be accessed correctly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry. The rules have induced some concerns taking into account that the generic TLD is the only one that specifies what devices should be able to open a website and the way in which this must happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be built in such a way as to be opened by the majority of Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
